It was a government cover up. They Photoshopped Moo OUT of the pictures in the original. That's where the rumors that it was staged in Nevada came from.
man, if I look closely I can see the details of where they photoshopped the turtle out - how could I have been so blind? Look closely around the turtle, and it is very clear.
Eric, Yeah, but you have to remember that in those days computers were pretty crude. Retouched photos always looked like the covers of "The Enquirer" in those days. As Johnny Winter once said in a blues tune, "I don't trust the govamint and my friends are actin' funny too..." I just figured it was my civic duty to bring this cover up to light finally. I can't tell you how I aquired the photo...lives are at stake. :)
All the times I have seen that photo, I never noticed all the details in it.....shame on me.
